I am paranoid about melting plastics while carrying luggage on my DRZ400. I installed this near the front of the stock muffler. It works great. I have no worries now.
The heat shield worked great. I have a custom-made carry saddle that I can hook Ortlieb's standard waterproof bicycle touring panniers. Have melted one already against my FMF powercore muffler. I taped some adhesive aluminum/FG cloth on the back, but the shield was no hotter than 110 F (checked with a IR thermo). Worked great on a weekend 350 mile camping trip thru the Yukon.
Just put 1100 dirt miles on my drz. The chili's heat shield and 20lt bags worked fabulous. All my gear stayed in place on the rim rocker trail. Thanks guys and gals for making a great trip possible. You are now a part of my travel gear.
I spent countless hours researching a good and for the most effective heat shield.. I heard about GCAG thru Adventure Rider Radio and started here with this heat shield and every other design seemed inadequate for the price and functionality. Truly effective in dissipating the heat well and saving my soft luggage from excessive heat. I would recommend to anyone looking for a heat shield this size!
Works but requires a larger metal strap than comes with the shield, as the stock canister is HUGE. You can easily pick up one at your local hardware store for $3.
